History & background

Commenced operations on 22 February 1971 as Bahawalpur Medical College, in a newly built facility on Baghdad Road; its foundation stone was laid on 2 December 1971 by Punjab Governor Lt Gen Attique-ur-Rehman. Founding principal Prof. Syed Alamdar Hussain Shah led the inaugural class of 108 students, including eight women. The college was subsequently renamed Quaid-e-Azam Medical College. It was established to give southern Punjab, a region of over 12 million people, its first co-educational medical college.

Location

Bahawalpur was the capital of the former princely state of Bahawalpur, ruled by the Abbasi Nawabs until it acceded to Pakistan in 1947 and later merged into Punjab in 1955. The city retains a distinct architectural and cultural heritage from its princely-state era, including palaces and libraries built by the Nawabs.

Admission criteria
