History & background

Established in 1951-52 by the Government of Punjab to meet the post-Partition shortage of doctors in southern Punjab; Punjab Governor Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar announced the decision in December 1950 and laid the foundation stone in April 1951, with the college inaugurated on 1 October 1951 and named in his honour. The first batch had 52 students, and Nishtar Hospital began functioning with 80 beds in 1953. The institution was elevated to university status as Nishtar Medical University on 5 May 2017.

Location

Multan, known as the 'City of Saints' for its many Sufi shrines, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South Asia and the largest city of southern Punjab along the Chenab river. It has historically served as a regional trade and cultural hub for the surrounding Seraiki-speaking belt.
