Founded in 1860 as the Lahore Medical School under the British Raj, making it the oldest medical institution in Pakistan and fourth-oldest in South Asia. It was renamed Lahore Medical College in 1886, then King Edward Medical College in 1911 in honour of King Edward VII, and was elevated to full university status as King Edward Medical University on 12 May 2005. Mayo Hospital was attached as its teaching hospital in 1871.
