Established on 2 May 1975 as Lahore Medical College under Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's government initiative to create new medical education seats; the first cohort of 313 students began classes on 12 August 1975. It was renamed Allama Iqbal Medical College two years later to mark the centenary of philosopher-poet Allama Iqbal. Its permanent complex, whose foundation was laid in March 1980, was inaugurated by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on 18 May 1989.
