History & background
Established in 1948 as Fatima Jinnah Medical College for women, on the site of the earlier Balak Ram Medical College founded in 1941 by the family of Sir Ganga Ram (closed after Partition). It admitted its first 39 students in October 1948 and was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Khawaja Nazimuddin on 31 March 1949, named after Fatima Jinnah with the personal approval of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It was elevated to university status on 1 July 2015.
Location
The college is located in Lahore near the historic Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, within the walled-city periphery of Punjab's capital. Lahore has been the centre of medical and higher education in Punjab since the colonial period.
