Approved in October 2008 with an annual intake of 100 students, MBBS classes began in January 2010 and the college was inaugurated on 1 January 2010 in Sheikh Maltoon Town, Mardan. It is named after Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan ('Bacha Khan'), the noted anti-colonial freedom fighter from the region, and became the first public-sector medical college in Pakistan to receive PMDC recognition in its very first year of establishment.
