Approved for construction in 1978 after a 1975 site search among Abbottabad, Dera Ismail Khan, Mingora and Chitral; classes began on 9 May 1979 with the first batch of 100 students initially housed at the Education Extension Centre. The permanent campus and teaching hospital opened on 30 December 1990. It is named after former President Ayub Khan, who hailed from nearby Haripur, and is the second-oldest medical college in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
