History & background

Approved by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in late 2011 as the first public-sector medical institution in Islamabad, the Federal Medical and Dental College was inaugurated on 27 February 2012 with an initial cohort of 100 MBBS students. It was formally established through an Act of Parliament on 21 March 2013 as a constituent college of the newly created Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), with the affiliated School of Dentistry completing a major infrastructure upgrade (scoring 94% in a national PMC inspection) by 2020.

Location

The college is located in Islamabad, Pakistan's purpose-built capital city developed from the 1960s onward, adjacent to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), the federal government's flagship public hospital.
