Conceived in the mid-1970s under Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to meet the Pakistan Army Medical Corps' growing need for physicians, and formally established in 1977 as a residential military academy in Rawalpindi with an initial cohort of 100 MBBS students. The first batch graduated in 1981 and was recognized by the UK's General Medical Council. A Dental Section was added in 1998, the same year AMC became a constituent college of NUST; in 2016 it became a constituent college of the newly formed National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS).
