The Ziauddin Group began with a small maternity home in Nazimabad, Karachi, founded by Dr. Aijaz Fatima and Dr. Tajammul Hussain in memory of Sir Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad. Its School of Nursing was established in 1986; in 1994 the Sindh government's Ordinance No. XVII created the Dr. Ziauddin Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, which became Ziauddin Medical University in 1995 under Sindh Assembly Act VI. It received its full university charter as Ziauddin University on 13 December 2005.
