History & background

Traces its origins to an 1881 medical school at Civil Hospital, Hyderabad, Sindh, the second-oldest medical school in Pakistan and the oldest in Sindh, with an inaugural batch of 45 students including one Muslim woman. When that school moved to Karachi in December 1945 and became Dow Medical College, the Sindh government reopened the Hyderabad institution in 1951, naming it Liaquat Medical College after Pakistan's first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan. It relocated to a new 570-acre campus in Jamshoro in 1963 and attained full university status in 2001 as Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences.

Jamshoro is a town on the west bank of the Indus River adjoining Hyderabad, Sindh, notable as the site of the Kotri Barrage and as a planned university town hosting several of Sindh's major public higher-education institutions.
