Established on 20 April 1973 under a Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto initiative to found three new medical colleges in Sindh, with Chandka Medical College the first, admitting 150 students in its first batch under founding principal Prof. Ali Mohammad Ansari. A request to upgrade it to a university was made in 1989 with Benazir Bhutto's support, and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah announced the establishment of a full medical university in Larkana on 12 April 2008, renaming it Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU).

Location

Larkana is a city in northern Sindh along the Indus River, closely associated with the Bhutto political family (whose ancestral home, Naudero, lies nearby) and known historically for its proximity to the ancient Indus Valley Civilization site of Mohenjo-daro.
