Founded on 7 April 1973 as Sindh Medical College following approval by a Government of Sindh committee, with roughly 200 students in its first MBBS batch and Khawaja Moin Ahmed as founding principal. It began operations within the paediatrics ward of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), a complex whose site had been army barracks since 1865 before being handed over in 1959. The college achieved university status as Jinnah Sindh Medical University on 2 June 2012, becoming Karachi's third medical university. Sindh Medical College (SMC) remains JSMU's own constituent teaching college for MBBS — the original institution the university grew out of — alongside the Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences for BDS. Beyond its own MBBS/BDS intake, JSMU also oversees a wider network described as "11 constituent and 35 affiliated institutes" covering allied health, nursing and postgraduate programs.
